Card Counters’ Glossary

I’ve done some posts in the past where I gave a list of blackjack terminologies and also just rambled on about some basic terms. Today I want to focus on some terminologies used by a specific group of blackjack players.

Card counters use some terms not commonly used by other players. The “special” terms they use of course are all related to card counting strategies. SO if you are interested in learning card counting or becoming better at it it would make sense to build up your card counting vocabulary.

Card Counting Terms

Betting Correlation - gives an estimate of the accuracy of the card counting system.

Back Counting - Usually done by non-participating players while standing in the back of the players at the table with the purpose of waiting for the count to become favorable before you join the table.

Balanced Count - used by any counting system with a count that starts at zero when the cards are shuffled and ends in zero when all the cards have been exposed.

Bet Spread - the ratio between maximum and minimum bet size

Card Weight - the value assigned to each card face. Value added to the “count” for each new card flipped up. Weights come in small integer values like –1, +1, or +2.

Count - a number that the player uses to estimate how favorable or unfavorable the deck is

Cover Bet - A bad bet made by a card counter to fool pit bosses into thinking that he’s not using any card counting strategy.

Insurance Correlation - a measure of how well the card weights correlate to the change in how favorable it is for the player to place an insurance bet; used by player to determine when to take an insurance

Penetration - refers to the number of cards that have been dealt before the cards are shuffled.

Playing Efficiency - the measure of how much the card counting system can gain if one follows its playing recommendations in comparison to what could be gained by always making the perfect play

Running Count - the sum of the weights of all the cards that have been exposed since the dealer shuffled the deck.

Shuffle Tracking - predicting which sections of the deck or shoe will be most favorable

Side Count - count apart from the main count usually involving a single card face, as in an ace side count.

Ten Poor - a deck that has a lower than average number of tens and face cards

Ten Rich - a deck that has a higher than average density of tens and face cards.

True Count -  count that has been adjusted according to the number of cards that have not been dealt; determined by dividing the running count by the number of decks that have not yet been dealt (or half-decks).

Unbalanced Count - count that starts or ends on a non-zero value.

Wonging - refers to method used by player to improve his edge by placing wagers only when the count is favorable and sitting out when the count is not favorable
