MIT Team To Be Made Into a Movie
If you have been following this blog for quite some time, you would know that we have quite a fascination for the legendary MIT Team composed of young “geeky” types who took Las Vegas by storm using their giftedness in math. They developed their own card counting strategy which earned them millions of dollars – and the ire of many a casino owner. Then again, even if you are new to this blog and yet you are a blackjack enthusiast, you would have definitely heard of this team. As such, you will be more than excited to hear that Hollywood is coming up with a movie about this group of young men.
With a working title of “21”, this new thriller is going to be based on the non-fiction book “Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T Students who Took Vegas for Millions” is set to have Laurence Fishburne and Kevin Spacey in its cast. Kevin Spacey will play the role of an MIT lecturer who serves as a mentor to six young MIT students. Together, they come up with a card counting strategy that will eventually “bring down the house.”
Fishburne, if he comes to terms with the producers, will play the role of a security consultant. He is tasked with tracking down these guys and catching them. Of course, his job is not made easy by these geniuses as they employ various strategies in and out of the casinos. Disguises and spotters are part and parcel of their lives as they continue to have big wins and avoid the authorities. However, they bring about their own downfall as they engage in in-fighting and bickering.
We all know that card counting is not really illegal, but it does bring down the house edge to great lows. The way that card counting works is to monitor the cards that have come up and from this know whether the deck is favorable to the blackjack player or not. When the odds are to the favor of the player, he can then place large bets and make huge wins. What gave the MIT Team greater chances was the way the applied advance mathematics to card counting. With great analytical minds and perhaps even photographic memory, they were able to count cards more accurately than any other person alive. As such, their success reached such great heights – great enough to catch the attention of the pit bosses and casino owners who were losing large amounts of money.
We do not know as of yet just how faithful the movie will be to the true story behind the MIT Team but with Kevin Spacey producing the movie, we can certainly expect a good one. The star of the movie is not really well known but since when did that matter, really? As for the director, Australian Robert Luketic has been announced to take charge.
Let’s hope that things will push through and that we will be seeing this movie pretty soon.
